Charleston: Casual/Outdoor Seafood Rec?
I'll be Charleston in November for the Citadel's homecoming. We're going to have a pretty large group coming into town, including a couple of small children/toddlers. I'm trying to find a fairly casual seafood place, preferably with an outdoor seating option (assuming weather permits) that can accommodate a large group (roughly 17 people). The outside seating is primarily to have somewhere to entertain the babies or take them in case they throw a fit, but isn't a necessary requirement.
My initial thought was Mimi's on James Island but I can't find a website and have only had brunch there, not sure that they serve dinner. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Unfortunately, Charleston's waterfront dining isn't what it should be. However, there are a few good places. The best of casual waterfront seafood is The Wreck on Shem Creek. They have a huge outdoor covered porch that can accommodate your group, the food is great for simple (mostly fried) seafood, and the view is beautiful. However, they do not take credit cards and they are only open for dinner. Fleet Landing is the best option on the peninsula. The food is a little more upscale but still casual, though it is only mediocre. The space is cool and the view is great.
The Wreck is great, but you should call ahead to see if they'll be able to accommodate such a large party. They have plenty of room, but they're often crowded. They don't usually take reservations, but might for such a large party.
Agree that Fleet Landing is not good -- though it is kid friendly. I also don't think the food at the Boathouse at Breach Inlet is good. I probably wouldn't go so far as to say it's terrible, but I'm not going back and I'm not recommending it to anyone. And if you go to Shem Creek Bar & Grill, you're not going for the food. As with most places on Shem Creek, you're going for waterside dining.
The Wreck is the best casual-style seafood I've had in the Southeast after 20+ years of traveling the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. That said, check to see if they can accommodate such a large group.
Thanks for all of the suggestions! We'd settled on Fleet Landing, mainly for kid-friendliness and central location, but I'm going to call The Wreck and see if they can accommodate us.
