Dinner for 4 on a budget

soccerfan80 Oct 19, 2008 12:37 PM

Any suggestions for a reasonable dinner for a family of 4 in Philadelphia? I'm looking for a table service restaurant, with entrees in the range on $10-$15. I'd prefer Italian or Mexican, but any other suggestions are welcome.

I've been to Jones, and many of the bars (Good Dog, Standard tap, etc), so maybe something more along the lines of a Villa Di Roma?

Sazon is a good choice. It has Venezuelan food prepared by a chef-owner. The atmosphere is nice with lots of locals and temple students. Lots of choices for the kids. The sandwiches and arepas are terrific. Get the plantains.

What day of the week? Mr. Martino's Trattoria on East Passyunk is very good and inexpensive (a few entrees may be over $15, but most are less, and it's BYO), but they are only open Friday through Sunday. Marra's, a block or two south on Passyunk, is also good and cheap, not in the same class as Mr. Martino's though.

For Mexican, head to Plaza Garibaldi on Washington Ave.

I second Mr. Martino's...great inexpensive BYO.
Another one of my inexpensive favorites is Ventiane Cafe in West Philly (4728 Baltimore Ave)...they have excellent Thai/Laotian food...and it's a BYO.

I just ate at Vietiane for the first time last week - quite delicious and affordable. I had duck spring rolls and chicken in tamarind sauce with sweet sticky rice. So good and the portions were generous (I thought). I definitely want to go back again soon since I live in the 'hood now.

I would also highly recommend Radicchio (an Italian byo on 4th and Wood - just one north of Vine) they don't take reservations but depending on what night you go and at what time, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. http://www.radicchio-cafe.com/
It's one of my favorite restaurants in the city and I'm always blown away by how inexpensive it is for what you get!
