Top Chef Fantasy Game

Hi all. I know I'm a bit early, but I just learned that there is a Top Chef Fantasy Game (kind of like fantasy football, I guess). I'm a neophyte to this whole fantasy playing so I'm not quite sure exactly what this is about. It seems that they assign points for certain things -- eg. winning challenges, crying, fighting and losing points for things such as being eliminated, cutting yourself, etc. I do have friends who are big fans of these online fantasy games and say it's a lot of fun. While I used to make fun of those people, looks like I'm going to be one of them. I've created a Chowhound group on fafarazzi.com. I thought it would be fun if we can all play once the season gets started.

Here's the link to sign up and pick your team.

And please join the Chowhound group when you sign up so we can compete against each other.

I kept the group public because I didn't want to really be bothered with the administrative duties of having people "apply" to this group. But anyone can join. And I'm not exactly sure what a "group" is or a "league" is. Are they the same thing? If somebody can enlighten me, I'd appreciate it!

    1. OK, now I just need to figure out how to play..................

      1. Cool, I'm in. It's hard to make your picks just by reading their bios.

          I'm in.

          Thanks for setting this up!

(However, the site could make it slighty easier to figure out!) ;-)

        2. Yay! Thanks for setting this up Miss Needle. Such a good idea! I can't wait for Top Chef to start...only 3 weeks but who's counting?

          1. ooh, fun! i'll have to get it on this. btw, Needle, i almost didn't recognize you with your new avatar! ;)

Oh silly me. I accidentally deleted my avatar and couldn't find it on my computer as I recently got a new one and shifted some files around. So this was the best I could do.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Fantasy Land!

              1. re: Miss Needle

i like it. probably because i love the color green.

thanks again for organizing this, i just joined fafa & set up my team. i hope i can figure it out as it progresses - like you, i'm a fantasy team newbie.

btw, does anyone else think this is the strongest crop of female chefs thus far?

            2. 2 days to update your teams!

              1. I am new to chowhounds, but have lurked for quite a while. This is my first post so forgive me for any mistakes. Thanks so much Miss Needle for finding this game and setting it up. Have been a Top Chef fanatic for all 4 seasons, and can't wait to try this. I play both fantasy football and baseball. We draft a team, make trades, etc. I guess my question is can we make changes week to week, or are the chefs we draft permanent? With my sports teams, we can make trades/moves each week. The website doesn't really give a lot of details. Good Luck to everyone! Can't wait to get this new season started.

Like everyone has said, the Fafa site is very hard to navigate, but I believe you have to make your picks every week, and have the opportunity to pick from the whole group of cheftestants. To compare it to fantasy sports- the entire cast is your "team" and every week you pick three "starters"

                  1. re: yamalam

Thanks. That is what I thought. I would be really disappointed if after a few weeks, my 3 chefs were eliminated.

                2. OK, I've joined fafa, but haven't the FOGGIEST idea how to find the Chowhound group - it doesn't come up in League searches.

ETA - NEVER MIND. I finally found it. Upthread comment was right - VERY hard to find!

Interesting....got a "friend" request within 5 minutes of me signing up for the Chowhound TC game. No one that I know - although she's got 316 friends and tons of "trophies" from the games she's played and won.

I guess people use this like Facebook or MySpace. Never did get that either.

                  2. There are some preview videos of the first QF & elimination on bravo's website. May help with making week 1 picks! One chef never even gets a chefs coat! They are eliminated during the first QF.

Hmmm....might have to go back and revise my picks based on those preview videos! Thanks for the heads up.

                    2. let's just say that after watching the first episode, I am pretty content with my picks (:

me too! i'm on the fence about one of my picks, but i'm giving him another week to prove himself. i get the feeling Stefan would probably be the safest bet s a replacement, but i just can't bring myself to add him to my team...i don't like the guy at all. he's clearly this season's Marcel.

i've never played any sort of fantasy sports game before, but i like this thing - it makes me feel like i have even more at stake when watching.

ok, so i clearly need to get a life :)

                        1. re: goodhealthgourmet

hah! I'm enjoying this fantasty top chef because my boyfriend is always futzing around with his fantasy football, so it both gives us a common interest.

Stefan is totally the new Marcel, but I still like him. I'm not a fan of that one girl (forgot her name) who made the undercooked farro. She second guesses herself and puts herself down way too much. She clearly has some issues

                        2. re: bitsubeats

Oh boy. Can you believe our group didn't score anything? Yeah, I think Stefan seems like he'd be a good choice -- he'll probably get far. And he seems to be a bit of an a** so I can see him fighting with judges, fighting with other contenders, etc. so having him on a team may generate some more points.

                          1. re: Miss Needle

Wait! I scored 2 points - but then had a -1 for Richard cutting himself while peeling apples. :-) So I have a grand total of 1 point. :-) And bitsueats has 3 points total and has a trophy already! And there's someone named SamCrow who has a few points (not sure if they're a CHer).

Weirdly - I'm not showing any points on the Chowhound game, but I got an EMail saying I have that 1 whole point. :-)

And I already detest Stefan. But I see what you mean by him fighting with judges and other cheftestants being good for the game. But I still don't like him.

                            1. re: LindaWhit

Here's a link to the leaderboard:

                              (I'm in, ahem, 2nd place

You get points when they curse? And lose points if their food is undersalted?? I thought it was just performance in the challenges. I wonder what else is awarded or subtracted points that we don't know about yet.

I don't like Stefan either, but I think he'll win a lot so I'll keep him. And I don't know if Eugene just got lucky, but I am bound by heritage to root for the Filipino dude in every TC season, so he's staying too. My third pick is Hosea, who is very likable, plus seems talented. I like Jamie too, maybe I'll switch her for Stefan after he proves to be very technical but lacking heart, which, by my calculations, always happens around episode...12, no 11.

                              1. re: yamalam

Oh! Shocking! I checked it last night and there were zeros for us all. Guess it takes time for them to tabulate the scores. However, my score is still at zero. I think I'll be making some changes to my team.

                                1. re: yamalam

Thanks. I couldn't figure it out last night. Looks like I'm going to have to make a switch for the next episode.

                                  1. re: yamalam

Thanks for the leaderboard list! Yes, you get points/have points taken for all sorts of things:

                                    Here's the scoring link: http://www.fafarazzi.com/tc5_how.php

Anyone who had Stefan as part of their team is doing well. He won QF, the Elim, and he's had a verbal fight with another cheftestant. Has he been beeped already? :-)

And yes - I'll have to make some changes as well to my team.

                                  2. re: LindaWhit

Whoo Hoo! Last place! Are you kidding? Not a single bleep for Alex & I was counting on him being a potty mouth. And Melissa, my hometown girl, use some seasoning! Lost 2 pts. for that one! She just needed to cry to keep me in the positive. Now I get why my boyfriend plays Fantasy Football! So glad we get to make new picks each week...gotta make a comeback, this is embarrassing!

                              2. ok, clearly i didn't understand all the nuances of this thing. silly me, i thought it was just about choosing the strongest competitors!

i hate that i have to add Stefan to my team because i really don't like him, but it looks like he's an easy way to rack up points...for now, anyway. i'm holding out hope that he'll end up pissing off all his fellow chefs and they eventually throw him under the bus during a team challenge & get him eliminated ;)

                                1. OK, so I guess I should have read the bios before I picked my team. Stefan gets me 10 points and the culinary school kid lost me 7. Would not have picked Patrick had I read the bio and known he was still in culinary school.

                                  1. BTW, there is also a fantasy game on Bravo's site. Different scoring rules.

                                    2. 10 points for me but in 190th place. Hubby also decided to join. Watched last season only. Liked the show. Quickly picked his team and is 13th overall. Huh?

                                      1. Ok, so I'm having a moment. How do I find the chowhound group? So let me get this straight, I don't pick my favorite chefs, just the ones who will get me the most points?

jcattles, if you click the link that MIss Needle linked in the OP, you should be first JOIN Fafarazzi, and then click "Groups" and then join the Chowhound public group. I think that's how I did it done. The Groups link is at the top of the Home page after you join.

Yikes - reading your response, I went back and read my post to you. That's how I "did it done"??????

It was 2:30 in the afternoon, and I had just gotten home from a certain procedure that you get to have when you turn 50 years old. I guess the drugs hadn't worn off yet.

                                              I'm better now. ;-)
