History of Street Meat?

Hi Chowhounders,

I was wondering if anyone out there can point me towards some articles or books about the origin and evolution of street food and street food vendors.

  1. I have a book called "Street Food" by Clare Ferguson with wonderful photos by Jeremy Hopley. It is a Time Life book with recipes, but does have narrative.

    1. I cannot answer your question, but I was the first guy to sell shish kabob on the street, in 1974, at a time where with one or two exceptions, there were only hot dogs. I was on TV twice, and after that the meat on a stick thing took hold.

hard2pleez, can you please tell us more about your experience? Where was your cart? What made you start selling kabobs while everyone else was selling hot dogs? What kind of kabobs did you make? This is a topic that really interest me and I would love any stories you could share. Thank you!
