I had dinner with the family on Saturday and the title says it all. I have been attending shows at Goodspeed since the late 70's so I'm familiar with the area but had not eaten at Gelston in many years. For the first time in a long time we brought our young children as we had tickets to the matinee performance of Big River. We got out at 6:00 with two hungry kids and with Gelston right next door we thought we should give it a try. The best part of dinner was the view of the river, bridge, Goodspeed and the fall foliage on the hillside from the enclosed wrap around porch. From there it was all downhill.
Apps:
eggplant wrapped around spinach and red pepper in a white sludge, tasteless.
tasty tender calamari
fish chowder that was mostly clams but thin and watery.

Mains:
Roasted Lamb Shank. When I asked if it was done ossobuco style the waitress ran off to the kitchen and returned to tell me that it was the upper leg part of the lamb. Despite the lack of information I ordered it and it was a roasted leg of lamb, not cut across the bone exposing the marrow, on a bed of mashed potatoes with a red/brown sauce. It was terrible. I could barely find any meat on the bone and what meat I found was very chewy.
Chicken wrapped around roasted vegetables, a special. It was not special and the vegetables were not roasted but were pureed, very strange. The mashed potatoes on the plate were not bad but if you are going to portion them out by a scooper at least rearrange them so it is not obvious.
Spaghetti Bolognese: Hey, it is what my kid wanted so we ordered it, not bad not great.
Grilled Cheese Sandwich: that is what my little guy wanted and it was terrible, not even grilled on one side which is why the cheese was not melted on the inside

Dessert: I ordered the key lime tart and the waitress returned minutes later to tell me it was no longer available. The cherry tart with what seemed like almond paste was o.k. as was the chocolate cake.

All in all it was less then I had hoped for. The stunning view and convience do not make up for the poor food, at least not for this "hound. Next time it is back to Du Village in Chester, a place I don't get to often enough.

We have eaten at Gelston House and found the same thing. the food is not that great. We did enjoy our dinners though at La Vista Gustosa across the street. You might want to try it the next time you go to Goodspeed. Jay
