$0.60 Canter's..... the shocking results. Langer's copycat?

People who regularly read my posts know that I have no love for Canter's. Despite the fact that I live 2 blocks away, I've only been there a couple of times and have been largely disappointed.

I went in expecting little, but figured I'd put up with a hassle and a wait for the mega-cheap price.

The first surprise.... when I got to the door at 7pm, I got in the back of the line (about 20 people). A few seconds later, someone mentioned that this line was for takeout only. Seriously? I went inside to find.... no waiting for a table! It was crowded, but several tables were open. We sat right now.

The second surprise.... we ordered the $0.60 special, expecting an anemic thing on a plate. What we got was an actual big stack deli corned beef sandwich.... miraculously, no skimping, on STEAM TOASTED RYE (!). That's right, you read it right, folks.... crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside.... Canter's has stolen Langer's schtick. Now I can't say when this happened, but I have to tell you.... it made a difference. The hot corned beef was a right decent and generous sandwich (even though they had the wayyyy wrong mustard out.... "russian beaver" and "no-name yellow"... not a Gulden's in sight. Top it off with half a pickle (hey, they had to cut corners somewhere!), a thimbleful of way-too-sweet potato salad, and a chocolate rugelach, and for $0.60 we have an absolute winner.

Now, would I go back to pay $12.00 for the same thing? Good question... I'll have to get back to you on that one. The actual meat was tender, flavorful, but not up to Magee's quality. But after last night, Canter's may very well be back on my culinary radar, if only because of the proximity of its steam toasted rye corned beef sandwiches to my house.

Canter's has a little area in the walkway between their two rooms where they have 10-20 different kinds of mustard. Sometimes, I just walk over and pick the one I want. The mustard containers on the table usually have something that's a little spicier than I like.

I've been going to Canter's for close to 30 years. I've never noticed their corned beef sandwiches to vary much. I think they serve a great one and always did, and I think they have the best potato salad in town.

I was there last week and asked for other mustard and got Gulden's. (Along with the russian beaver)

They had Gulden's , you just hafta asked for it. We asked for different mustard and they brought us two different bottles - both great!

How could Canter's be a copycat? They started in LA in 1931 and Langer's started in 1947.

It's the whole .60 which Langer's did first -- last year.
