A Voce or Scarpetta?

lbzeats Oct 15, 2008 09:13 AM

Looking for a place for a birthday dinner. We can spend $$$ on this one. It needs to have a GREAT wine list and well prepared, interesting food. Don't usually do Italian but have had some recent positive reports on A voce and Scarpeta. Thoughts?

To clairfy, we do alot of Italian but have not generally for the "event" meals. Great Italian would be welcome.

I've never been to Scarpetta, but I went to A Voce after getting sworn in (so was meant to be an event meal), and was pretty unimpressed. I mean, it was a decent meal (although my husband had to send his pasta back, it was literally raw, not al dente, how he likes it), but let's put it this way -- if I found myself in the neighborhood again for some reason, I might go back, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again. Oh, and you're basically sitting in leather office chairs, which I don't think says "special occasion" -- nothing about the decor says special in my opinion.

been to both. hands down-scarpetta. a voce is not what it used to be. its chef left and the food is just not the same. you will not go wrong at scarpetta.

I haven't been to Scarpetta, but I'd be wary of Scarpetta due to the chef change.

I think Lucia may have made a typo, and meant to refer to the chef change at A Voce.

Have been to both...A Voce when Carmellini was there....Scarpetta is the answer.

Yes sorry--was referring to the departure of Carmellini from A Voce.

Thanks to all, seems Scarpetta is the one. Big problem though, no reservations within a week of the big day. Other ideas??!!

Did you check for rezzies by phone or opentable.com? I found out on CH that opentable only has a limited number of rezzies, but by phone to the restaurant directly there are many more to be had.

i believe that all the front room tables at Scarpetta are first-come first-serve...you may want an actual reservation for this birthday dinner...but depending on what time you are dining, you might plan to come early sit in the front room (same delicious menu) but ask them to keep you on a wait list for a main dining room table on the off chance something opens up...
