Harmony Farms in LA Times Today
The Calendar section in the LAT's has a very interesting piece by Mary McNamara in her LA Centric column on Harmony Farms in La Crescenta. They are a specialty meat store featuring hormone free meat, but she goes on to describe their game meats which include kangaroo, elk, ostrich, wild boar sausage, alligator, buffalo, venison and even rattlesnake. They also have more conventioal offerings, including Kobe beef at $29 per pound.
The manager/part owner is a guy by the name of Sonny Cabrales, (any relation to CH's own Cabrales?).

Great article...did you notice that the owner commented about retail beef buyers preference for similar ( prime) cuts, ie tri tip etc, saying "nobody cares to buy cuts such as short ribs..."
Hopefully some of this will change as the trend for more braised beef dishes, ie. short ribs, are becoming more common on menus, and even the LA Times food section showcased short rib recipes recently.

I remember the first time I bought ox tails at the market and then came home and improvised a recipe to make dinner with them. My wife kept shaking her head, but she liked the dinner, (or more probably she liked the fact that I had done the shopping and cooking).
It may just be that we are so insulated here on CH we lose sight of the fact that most people are not interested in branching out from the "tried and true" cuts of meat, (or whatever) that they are used to buying and cooking.

The side effect of people trying different cuts of meat are that the prices go up. I remember as a kid that flank steak used to be very cheap, along with chicken feet, and ox tail.
