eggplant hero

Anyone know of a good eggplant sandwich in midtown? (the closer to bryant park the better.) I'm talking old school - fresh eggplant, not frozen, nice red sauce, good roll.

  1. Maffei Pizza 6th ave @ 22nd. totally old school. fresh eggplant - check. nice red sauce - check. good roll - check. worth the twenty minute walk from Bryant Park.

    1. This is actually the only thing I recommend at Manganaro Hero Boy -- I really like their eggplant parm.

      1. I've heard Lazzara's (38th & 7th I think) makes a great chicken parm might translate well to eggplant and it fits the "near Bryant Park" criteria.

Both the chicken and meatball parm heros are great at Lazzara's, I'm sure they do the eggplant just as well.

I haven't tried it but agree the chicken and meatball parms are indeed great at Lazzara's. I like that they come on semolina rolls.

          2. I LOVE the eggplant parm sandwiches at Bruno Ravioli on I think 2nd (or maybe 1st) near 23rd street. Definitely one of the best I've had. They're a little heavy on the sauce which translates to poor traveling, but if you tell them to go easy on it then its good to go.

            1. I love Mondello's -- 37th btw 5th & Madison -- they have chicken, eggplant and veal parm heros, baked zitis and lasagna (not a huge fan of their pasta, but I love their eggplant). There is always a line out the door but they are fast (really fast and always hot). YUM.
