i had a really fun private party at el quijote on 23rd st. there are 2 private rooms- decorated in a very old school spanish style. the service was excellent- the food was fine ( we only had tapas) but we were full and had a blast.

I almost had a large party at Sala 19 in Gramercy. For that size group it's 30 or 40 per person ( I can't remember off the top of my head). The downside is that you have to eat family style from pre chosen items on the menu. I wanted my guests to be able to choose their meal but if this is what you're looking for - i've heard it's great. I've eaten there a few times - food is tasty, bar and restaurant are always full and the staff is friendly.

If you want to keep Food cost low, always stick with Mexican. It's the lowest food cost there is (as long as you don't head to Rosa Mexicano)! I always recc. the inexpensive and super-kitschy El Cantinero on University Place. Great festive place and everyone has a great time there - super Sangria, too! Happy Birthday! You are nice to be so considerate with your friends. Nice! RARE!
