Sparks Revisited

My wife Maureen and I had dinner with our good friends Bill and Linda last Friday night at Sparks. It was Bill and Linda's first visit to this venerable steakhouse palace. To cut to the chase, we had a terrific time, and we all thought it was as good a steakhouse experience as we have had.

We were seated promptly in the older section (and to my way of thinking, the more atmospheric section) of the restaurant. Our waiter was a real pro, with 30 years on the job. He sized us up at a glance and gave us what we wanted: excellent service, little interruption and solid advice on the wine. He should open a school for waitstaff.

For starters, we split the prosciutto and melon dish and the mozzarella and tomato. Rather than just plop the dishes down in the center, our waiter brought them to the table so we could see them, then divided them among the four of us, a nice touch.

For the main course, Bill had the prime sirloin, Maureen had the filet mignon, and Linda and I both had the lamb chops, accompanied by creamed spinach and hash browns. We all like our meat charred, and they did a terrific job. I am beginning to drool, sitting here thinking of those lamb chops.

We split a bottle of Talbott Chardonnay with out appetizers (a steal at under $50), and we had a Zinfandel (sorry, forgot the label), again at a reasonable price.

All in all, it was a memorable evening, and we'll definitely be back to Sparks.

  1. I will never get the fascination with Sparks--at all. I've had their lamb chops and they are charred alright--that's all there is in terms of flavor. There are much better steakhouses out there these days.

      Sorry your experience(s) as Sparks didn't match ours, but I can tell you that our lamb chops were as good as they get. My wife and I are lamb lovers, have been eating it all our lives, and I can say that those were some great lamb chops.
