sonoma - el dorado kitchen or the girl & the fig
The last two dinners I had at El Dorado (last summer and the summer before) were among hte culinary highlights of my trips to Napa and Sonoma. I can't say enough about the overall quality of the experience. It's a lovely room, a great, varied menu with beautifully plated and prepared food, and excellent, attentive service. I liked the overall experience better than even Cyrus, at a fraction of the price.
I can't speak to Girl and the Fig, which had a menu unappealing to me. I can only say that El Dorado is marvelous.
I had the opposite experience of rruben. I've been to El Dorado 3 times in the last 18 months. Atmosphere is fun; bar scene is very good and the room very attractive in a more sophisticated, minimalist way. But, each time the food has been boring and poorly prepared -- little spice or imagination. No pizazz or anything out of the ordinary.
Girl and the Fig is a bit more homey and less "urban", seeking a more rural, country atmosphere. The bar is fun (try the wine flights specializing in Rhones) and the patio is terrific in warm weather. For my taste, the food is better than El Dorado -- a bit more home made and less corporate. It is not at the same level of other wine country hangouts, eg. Bouchon, Redd, Ubuntu. But, it's very worthy of a casual lunch on a beautiful day.
Elsewhere in the town of Sonoma, Cafe La Haye is better for dinner than either of the two mentioned above. It's very local with a strong personal touch from the chef in a relaxed atmosphere. Not open for lunch.
So, for me, I'd do Girl and the Fig for lunch, Cafe La Haye for dinner and El Dorado for a more urban vibe for drinks -- pre or post dinner.
