How is it? I hear some raves on this board before, but I was wondering what are some recommendations for their dishes. Was going to check it out for lunch, but instead went to Don Antonio's down the street (blah).

Thanks.

Always a good choice, lunch or dinner. Tasty, authentic food and having dinner upstairs with out of towners is fun, nice buzz and some wailing music in the background. Warm service too. Old time place and neighborhood fave.

I don't remember many specific dishes I've had there, but I've always been happy with my meals there. Last time I had a three-way combo plate that I enjoyed (esp. the chile relleno.)

Zoe's description of it as a "neighborhood fave" is perfect. No particular element is completely extraordinary about it, yet the food, service & environment are just a little better than expected, the people a bit warmer, the margaritas tastier, and the prices a bit lower...it all adds up to a place you're delighted to frequent. (Do sit upstairs, however, and check out the interesting artwork, all of which is by the owner's wife.)

Lares is a wonderful neighborhood place. Two of my favorite dishes at Lares:
Chipotle chicken: always good, even though the spiciness level varies wildly.
Potato tacos: very homey & good
Weekend brunch is also fun there.
A cheaper alternative with similar food is Gilbert's El Indio on Pico. Gilbert's has one of the cheapest lunches/brunches in town, and is very popular on weekends.

Went there today for lunch. Excellent Mexican food. I'm definitely a fan. Had a plate called Savanitas, which was sliced beef in a liquid sauce. Served with some sort of beans with meat mixed in and some corn tortillas. Excellent quality.
