Help in Escondido: Tacos Alex is closed
Our favorite (only, in fact) taco shop is closed, but we don't know the full story. It's located in Baja Foods on 9th Ave., which has recently shut its doors. The building was recently vandalized, so it could be a temporary closure. They've had other issues, though, so it may be permanent. I'm asking Escondido chowhounds to keep their ears open for rumors and their eyes open for new taco shop openings (in the hope it'll be Alex).
We'll soon be at the swap meet for some good food, but what will happen next time we're having a taco craving? We'll have to drive awfully far to fulfill it.

re: beth1
I stick w/tacos de asada. They come with beans on them and are pleasantly greasy. The salsa is a perfect complement. I'm not as adventurous as my husband, but he usually gets some tripa and cabeza as well. He enjoys the spicy cucumber that they often have. Avoid the steam-tray items; I tasted the chicken once and it was lousy. I haven't tasted the birrira, though. DH and I both feel Alex is worlds apart from other taco stands (including the new Vallarta), and we just went without while it was closed. Looking forward to your opinion.

I was on 9th yesterday, and there were a couple of cars parked in front of Baja, but the inside was dark, and the windows were still barred. There was something going on at the grocery across the street, so the cars could have been from that. I hope they reopen--we don't need to lose any more businesses here.

Maestra - Sorry to hear about Alex - I did walk in a long time ago and saw the neat speedy gonzalez drawing but I was full.
HAve you checked out the taqueria in Mi Pueblo? The pastor looks legit and its always busy when I am there. I think they are dollar a pop.
Here is one of my first chowhound posts: "Tour de Birria in Escon" http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/89268 You might get some milage from that.
What taco fillings to you order?
PS Tacos El Paisa is gas and tripworthy. -
I'm sure they're different from Alex, but Antonio's on Valley is good. And clean. Stay away from the Alberto's on Rose (we were going to go there once, but the place was filthy). Antonio's also makes their fries in house from whole potatoes for their carne asada fries. They only accept cash. Hope this helps if you get an immediate craving.
