I Cry Uncle -- Stop Pop-Up Survey

OK, I give up. That horribly annoying pop-up request to participate in a survey now comes intruding in every couple of clicks. I know enough not to participate. How do I get it to go away?

Chow, you should know better. C'mon. Cut it out. I'm a frequent Chowhound reader and contributor -- don't abuse me.

    stopped them for me.

the popup now is floating around, trying to evade my closing click. Ive taken the surveys a couple of times, it keeps coming back but not opeing if I click on it, just disrupting everything.
          Help, CHOW, this is awful.

OK, after the zillionth time the popup survey appeared, I clicked on it that I'd participate. First question, age: I chose "Under 13." No more questions, at least so far.

Ahhh, more than one way to skin the proverbial cat... seems lucky the second question wasn't
"no, really, how old are you..."

I also complained about them a couple of weeks ago. Then it was fine. I think the frequency has a lot to do with how many people are on Chowhound. The more people on Chowhound, the less it will come up for you as it will be distributed among the masses. When I complained that it was coming up every five minutes, I believe it was early on a Sunday morning -- a time where the visitors to Chowhound are lower. Whatever algorithm that's in place regarding those damn surveys needs to be modified.

          Firefox
          Tools
          Options
          Content
          Check block popup windows.

Lets see how long this post lasts!

Just a caveat: I block popups with Firefox's built-in blocker, but that doesn't stop all surveys, some of which use technologies which bypass traditional pop-up blockers. Even with Adblock Plus installed as well, I still occasionally get survey pop-ups. Not often, mind you, but still occasionally. I definitely recommend both tools to reduce ads and surveys overall.

I also have pop-up blockers installed. These surveys are bypassing them.

Not sure you've tried this, but if you have the Adblock Plus FF plug-in, the first time you get a given survey, you can try setting up a wildcard block and you'll likely never see that survey again (or any of its sister surveys). :-)

Thank you! I did not know that. I will try to set it up next time it comes up. Now, I'm kind of hoping to see one of those damn surveys! ; )

I use this and rarely have any pop up. It has made a world of difference!

Thank you Melanie. I have voiced my opinion in a very inelegant way. It involves lots of growling. Sometimes it is impossible to be articulate.

Heheh! I should have said that thread was for technical issues. I'm sure that pop up surveys are here to stay, but they could operate more smoothly. Hope you get a response in the other thread.

Unfortunately the advertisers require them to get those survey results, which means we have little choice about running them. But you shouldn't be getting them every few clicks -- are you blocking the cookie that tells the survey you've already seen it recently?

As I mention here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/5596... the surveys are poorly designed. It's a disrespectful to impose these ads on Chowhound users if they're going to be both intrusive AND a waste of our time.
