mustard greens

where would I buy mustard greens in SF this weekend? or are they seasonal? advice much appreciated, thanks.

I got a large flawless bunch at Alemany Farmers Market for $1. The vendor had many, all in great shape so they must be in season now.

Call and ask at Trader Joe; I've seen them there in packages.

Also, Safeway-type groceries will carry greens pre-packaged, already cleaned and cut up...

A lot of Safeways have them loose with the other greens, too. Much cheaper.

Especially in an "ethnic" (Asian or African-American) neighborhood. People tend to think of chain supermarkets as being all the same, but actually what they stock varies a lot depending on the perceived clientele of the neighborhood.

in the end, I actually bought "Chinese" mustard greens at the Safeway on Fillmore--which chain, as Ruth says, does vary its stock by neighborhood. The Marina Safeway is "my" basic grocery store, and it's had mustard greens in the past--and had collards when I was looking yesterday--but it sure didn't have a "southern foods" section as the Fillmore one does...now to see if the dish works...(we have various pizza places on preset on our phones--just kidding)

Thanks for reporting back! I first became aware of how much supermarkets vary when I was shopping at an Albertson's in a Latino neighborhood that had a giant Mexican food section right in the middle of the store. They also had, I counted one day, six different kinds of greens (collard, mustard, etc.).
