veal shank- Edm

Has anyone had any success in purchasing Veal Shank in Edmonton? I have heard it is fairly difficult to get (and expensive). I am okay with ordering (I have a month). I would have normally gone to Cameron's, but with them closed I am not sure where to turn.

The Save-On in Terwillegar (23 and Rabbit Hill) has (had...have been out of town for a couple weeks...) veal shank, and other cuts) recently. Fresh, vacuum sealed, from a farm in Quebec. Not too expensive either.

I saw some at Sunterra in the Lendrum Shopping Centre on Friday.

I would call the Italian Centre and ask if they could source one for you.

          cleopatra999:

Good question. I used to make osso buco fairly frequently but when I asked my wife about your question, one we could not remember the last time I made it and two, we do not recollect where we purchased the veal shanks.

One source was Urban Fare but that of course will not do you any good. Another was Colonial in the Lendrum Shopping Centre but I do not go there as frequently as I used to since it converted to a Sunterra.

I think Safeway used to have them from time to time. It is the kind of cut that I tended to pick up when I saw it and put them into the freezer for future use.

One place you might want to try is Andy's IGA, Their butcher's department can surprise. I know when I am looking for ground veal to add to other meats when I am planning a big pot of bolognese it is one of the spots I check out.

Let us know what you find. Although it is only 9:30 a.m. your question has both of us wanting some braised veal.

I second Andy's IGA. I haven't bought veal shank there, but their butcher shop is full service so I would expect you can order any cut you want from them.

I'm guessing you will be able to special order it from any decent butcher shop. Just ask.
