North China Restaurant: Bethesda

crowsonguy Oct 10, 2008 07:49 PM

Was surprised that I could find no mention of this restaurant on Old Georgetown Road on this board. I looked at the menu after I had been to a cooking class at L'Academie De Cuisine, and along with the schlock it has some interesting sounding Taiwanese and country-style items: http://www.northchinabethesda.com/ima....
Anyone been there? Should I save some room after my next cooking class?

Have never tried but also am curious. I believe the restaurant had been up for sale for a good bit of time about two years ago. Not sure if it is now under new ownership, but it looked a little more "open" when I passed by the other day...you could actually see into the space where before you could not.

I haven't eaten there in maybe 20 years, seriously! It used to be wonderful, then went downhill and I pretty much forgot it existed. I'll have to check it out now.

Clearly new ownership since the menu says so, and I don't think there were any Taiwanese style restaurants in Maryland 20 years ago. The weekend Taiwanese dim sum looks very interesting.

Definitely try North China Restaurant. What a great surprise! I've lived in Bethesda for 15 years, and had never gone in (looked like it had gone downhill), but had a great meal there on February 1, 2009. Tried a variety of Taiwanese and traditional Chinese appetizers, and had an excellent Szechuan beef noodle soup. If you like spicy, ask for hot sauce for a bit of extra zip. The menu was ambitious, everything was well executed and extremely tasty and the check for two-- with leftovers-- was $32. Definitely a find! And despite the name, they cover both North and South Chinese cuisine.
