Went to have some Thai food at lunch today, overheard that 98 South was closed. Walked by and sure enough it was - oy, the economy!!! I think that place was going a little downhill but it was still busy whenever we went.

No answer at 56 East either. I'll miss 98 South, it had character.

I am sorry to hear it, I loved both of them. Enjoyed many a martini after a show and many an afternoon with my sis, sipping wine, with shopping bags splayed all around our feet, at 56East.

Sorry to hear that as well. The food was a little disappointing for our last meal there but the drinks were always good.

I wonder if Kizake (part owned by the 98S/56E owner) is closing as well? The times we were in there it was dead empty.

Luckily, AZCentral.com has a timely review of KiZake that came out today. :)

Whoops! Well, those reviews are usually written a few weeks or more before they actually run. Azcentral also did a story on the closures today that had a little more info:

My husband's company had a party at Serranos (ack) on Arizona Ave and we stopped in a few places to wash away the horrible aftertaste :) - Chandler was packed, very young crowd. We ended up going to El Zocalo for 2 margs then saw some live music at San Tan Brewery. Seemed like everyone was talking about 98. People told us it would reopen in a couple months, that people were already bidding on it. I think one of the bartenders at Zocalo was from 98 South but couldn't be sure. And if he was - not sure if he came over after 98 closed or before.

Anyhoo ... also saw a sign for a pizza place going where Babycakes was, and an Irish Pub is going in where there used to be a wine and cheese shop, right in the middle between 98 and the brewery. Fun stuff going on down there!

An investment group bought the restaurant and rights to the name. I hear the chef is from Kendall-Jackson Winery and has created food/wine pairings for dinners around the world. He plans to concentrate on foods that pair well with wine. Prices are supposed to be lower than those at the old 98 South, but I haven't been there yet. Thought I'd give them time to get their sea legs. Anyone who does go, please report!

The Irish pub a few doors down, Murphy's Law, seems to be doing well, too, but I heard the food was so-so. Any other impressions?

Looks like the new 98 South has reopened. I stopped in the other night to listen to the jazz jam on Tuesday nights. They offered up a $20.00 3 course menu with a lot of items from the regular menu. The jazz music was a little loud, but I guess that's the idea of a jam! Will definitely be back and look forward to going on a Friday or Saturday night.
