Hi there,

I'd like to know where I can buy chanterelle mushrooms. I want to purchase them, not eat them in a restaurant (just to be clear).

Thanks!

Actually, SOS Chef on Ave B near 7th Street, just south of the park, is the best bet for mushrooms of any sort. They are not always the cheapest, but usually competitive. However, their quality and consistency is far superior. They do mostly a wholesale trade to restaurants. Garden of Eden is second best, in my opinion.

Manhattan Fruit Exchange in Chelsea Market has them every time i need them.

I've seen them at Fairway, but you can't count on it. Sometimes they have them, sometimes they don't.

I've seen them at Garden of Eden on 14th St. near Union Square - they have an excellent mushroom selection. Citarella usually has them, as does Dean & Deluca, though I suspect they are more expensive at the latter, and they sometimes don't look so good.

Also, the produce place in Chelsea market has a good selection of mushrooms at reasonable prices. Unlike much of their other stuff, the mushrooms are often in good condition. I think, but not certain, that I saw chanterelles there last week. Call them to be sure.. Manhattan Fruit Exchange is the name.

That's right - I forgot that I had noticed that they had a nice selection.

Quality of mushrooms there can sometimes be iffy, but their prices are the most competetive, I find.
