State Fair

I'm going to the State Fair tonight. Anything worth seeking out this year food wise?

Visitors to the Texas State Fair spend more than $28 million. That's a lot of Chicken Fried Bacon.

I tried:

Fried Grilled Cheese Sandwich w/ side of tomato soup - so bland I only ate a few bites. It was also dripping with grease.

Chicken Fried Bacon - So salty I could only eat one. On the good side, it wasn't overly greasy.

I guess if you order both above and put the bacon in the sandwich it might me good.

Fried Banana Split - Ordered the mini version (1 ball instead of 3) and glad I did. Not sure why it's called a banana split. I was basically a very small piece of banana stuffed in a big ball of sweet dense smooth peanut butter that was dipped in batter and deep fried. It's covered with tiny amount of Hershey's chocolate (yuck), whipped cream, cherry, and and like 10 pieces of dipping dots ice cream. Luckily I like peanut butter, cause that's all you really taste.

Deep fried chocolate covered strawberries - my friend thought these were fantastic. The strawberries were juicy and sweet, but being a chocolate snob, I didn't think they were that great.

Hans Mueller Turkey Leg - best item by far. Took it home for dinner the next day and even after reheating, was still juicy.

Has anyone else tried the chicken fried bacon? The whole concept cracks me up

I tried the chicken fried bacon...It wasn't too bad, though it was pretty salty. I made it through two and a half of the four piece order. Mine was served basically at room temperature, so that was a little disappointing. I was happy to see that the pieces I got weren't loaded with a giant fried shell of breading.

Also had a spicy garlic sausage from some random stand that was pretty decent. Very strong garlic flavor and pretty darn spicy. Sausage was a little dried out, though.

The Hans Mueller Turkey Leg was by far the best thing I ate there.

My wife and her family go on and on about Jack's Fries, but I just think they're ok. Am I missing something here?

There are brochures you can pick up near the ticket booths that have a list of all the deep fried foods and where you can find them.

Not too often. Your deep fried s'more tastes a bit like the fried chicken tenders.

I went last night, and the one thing I can't get out of my head was the deep fried chocolate covered strawberries.
