Top 2 Pizza Places In NYC - Zagat

Mike V Oct 7, 2008 05:45 AM

It was just announced by Zagat that 2 Brooklyn Pizza places made the city's top pizza places in NYC. One a new comer is Lucali's in Carroll Gardens which scored 1/10 of a point higher than DiFara's. I'm sure we will be hearing a lot about Lucali's in Chowhound.

Thanks Mike V . I will now have to try LUCALI.

We have always found Zagat a reliable guide to help select a rstaurant.

What kind of Pizza do they have?,

Really? I find this hard to believe. I can't imagine anyone from New York enjoying St. Louis style pizza.

Lucalli isn't exactly 'new', but it is great, probably #2 after DiFara.

Lucali's has been around for 2 years now and has been much discussed on these boards pretty much since it opened.

The pizza is amazing. I'd say the second-best in the city after DiFara, but the system for acquiring some of it, and the atmosphere in which you consume it is so much better than the Midwood institution that I totally get that 1/10th of a point.

I think the ratings are for food only, but since one only votes from 0-3 it's easy to see why a 1/10 point difference (out of 30) does not matter much, especially since they do not get the same number of votes. 0-3 does not leave much room for subtlety. While I probably would give Lucali a "3", to me it still is not in the same league as DiFara. (Not all four star movies are of the same caliber either). Not to mention waiting for tables (or takeout when they do it) is pretty quirky at Lucali's as well (although it is fairer).

I ate at Lucali exactly once. Decor super fantastic. Service fine. Price reasonable. Pizza was ok but not brilliant. There are neighborhood places that are as good or better.

Some say Difara should get negative points on decor. Service?

I thought Lucali's pizza was very , very good but it didnt send me. It was very carefully made -with afine crust but there was no intensity. Im hoping the pizzamaker there will grow, because he has definite serious promise. Di Fara's has intensity and deliciousness. I 'm no serious pizza buff, but have had pizzas at Franny's and La Pizza Fresca, and even, heaven help me, LaVilla that were more satisfying. than Lucalis. pie.
