The right direction is about 800 miles east of Chicago.

Pastrami is not as as much of a signature sandwich here in Chicago as it is in NY. But Manny's coffee shop makes a very good one.

Manny's is a kick and definitely worth a visit, altho their pastrami -- IMO a fairly spicy version -- is not necessarily hot (more like steam-table warm, if that) , altho if the servers are in a good mood, they might heat it up for you. Go there without huge NYC-deli expectations but rather unique-Chicago-experience expectations and you should enjoy. (Other excellent sandwiches there include corned beef, boiled brisket --the horse radish is on the tables -- and carved roast beef)
