Ok, here's a challenge, find me a place in LA that serves oyster stew. Oysters are easy to come by and you'd think that every restaurant that serves fresh oysters would also have oyster stew, but so far I've only seen it once, at a McCormick & Schmick's. Has anyone seen oyster stew anywhere else. Just to clarify, when I say oyster stew, I mean oysters, butter, shallots, and milk (maybe a little cream).
Now before you tell me to just go make it myself, I feel that I should confess that I'm incredibly lazy and I hate shucking oysters.
I think I had it once at Hungry Cat but that was quite awhile ago, definitely at least a year before the remodel. I would love to find a place that has oyster pan roasts to rivel those at Grand Central Oyster Bar. Had a very nice clam stew last weekend but that was at Hog Island in S.F. so no help there either!
re: Debbie W
Within the last year, I think 8-9 months ago, I had a "Oyster Chowder" at Hungry Cat. It was surprisingly good, and I craved it for weeks afterward. Now you've gone and reminded me of that craving, darn you.
I don't know if what HC served was just as simple as what you describe, but it sure sounds quite close. Unfortunately, who knows when they might have it again.
