  1. I haven't been to Le Pont De La Tour or Landau so you will have to look to others on those options, but I can say that I would highly recommend Hereford Road. Great service, innovative and unpretentious cooking and the final bill while not cheap by any means, is good value.

Thanks for the recommendation. We actually decided to go to Andrew Edmunds instead. The place was very cute, good food, very good wine list. We had an amazing reisling for 18. Hereford Road is high on my list though. I'll be trying that place as soon as I can.

Some of my family (who were visiting from overseas) and I tried Hereford Road on a Sunday night a few weeks ago. There were four of us. We were not bowled over, I have to say. I had a crab on toast appetizer, which had a curry-based dressing and which (for me) was not much above what you would find in a good college canteen. I followed this with a beef cheek main dish. This was quite flavourful but not perfect, and I found I had to add ground pepper from the table.

My brother, who used to work in the restaurant business, said Sunday nights can be iffy due to the chef often taking that night off. Nonetheless, I would not hurry back.

In contrast to this experience, we went to Phoenix Palace a couple of times and Tom Ilic and thoroughly enjoyed those occasions. Tom Ilic does wonderful food, with maximum flavour at minimal prices. Kudos to him.
