It used to be Hellman's or Miracle Whip

Here's the dilemma. I was about to take a jar of Helllman's Light Mayonnaise when I noticed two new light mayos on the shelf. There was Hellman's Mayonnaise Dressing with extra virgin olive oil and Hellman's Canola cholesterol free mayonnaise. Of course I read the product labels and still came way confused. So I did what any self respecting Chowhound would do - I bought all three! I have had mayonnaise every which way to attempt to discern the best tasting version and I am still confused. I am partial to the canola oil mayo. Any other opinions?

  1. Perhaps I am off base. I have tried all three, but not at the same time like you. They all taste fine to me. I have been going with the olive oil variety as I think it is the most healthy of the three. Am I correct or way off base. No, I don't think mayo in any form is a revolutionary new health food.

Healthy ... hmmm ... but "with" olive oil? That implies only that it has SOME olive oil in it, probably among other oils.

So, what percentage of olive oil?

If I'm not mistaken, it has a very small amount of olive oil in it. I looked into it a while back, and can't remember specifics, but I do remember concluding it was really just a marketing gimmick.

there was quite a detailed thread about this hellman's mayo dressing with olive oil:

      1. Try Spectrum brand canola mayo, sold at Whole Foods. You won't go back!

I like that too - I think I've been mistakenly buying the 365 brand instead lately, and it's not as good.

        2. Watch the sugar amount in the nutritional info. None is best, but they are adding it to the light stuff more an more these days.

I bought a jar of Hellman's Light Mayo yesterday and there was no sugar in it.

          2. Since watching my cholesterol more these days I've been using the hellman's canola cholesterol free too. I greatly prefer the regular hellman's but it's not such a bad substitute.
