A while back I posted asking for anniversary caliber places in Loudoun County. A couple of you mentioned this Italian restaurant in The Plains called Girasole. My wife and I had dinner there last night and it was very nice. Overall, I would give the experience a B+. First, the drive there is quite nice, going through Middleburg into Faquier County and reaching The Plains. The restaurant itself is beautiful. There's an awesome outdoor patio with wooden pergola and rolling water fountain, that unfortunately we couldn't use since it was pouring. Inside, the decor is stained wood and stone. It surprised us of how large of a restaurant it was for being so far outside of DC. Onto the food:
Appetizer: My wife and I shared the Escargot which was good. They were swimming in a very lemony/garlicy juice that was perfect for sopping up with bread.
Salad: My wife had the fresh tomato and olive tapenade salad which was excellent. Very fresh! I had the Ceasar salad which was very anchovey, but that's how I like it. The presentation for my salad was mediocre, but it tasted great.
Pasta: We split a Cannelloni filled with shredded veal and spinach. This was an odd dish. Both my wife and I thought that the filling was more reminiscent of a Mexican burrito filling then an Italian Cannelloni. Also, the filling didn't have much flavor and was very dense. The tomato sauce over the Cannelloni was excellent though.
Main Course: My wife had a very good Veal Saltimbocca with prosciutto. It was served over spinach and 2 potato croquettes. I had Grouper with Chantrelle mushrooms. The fish and mushrooms were incredible, but the asparagus and potato served with it was nothing special.
Dessert: Both delicious. My wife had the Chocolate Torte, rich and very choclatey. I had the Passion Fruite Custard which was outstanding.
All in all, we were least impressed with our Pasta choice then anything else, but it was a very nice dining experience and I would go again. Their Sunday brunch looks like it's worth a try as well.
