Dinner & Jazz on the cheap?

I would like to go out this Friday night and have dinner, and then see some jazz at the same location, and not spend a fortune.

I know that Scullers, the Regattabar, & Les Zygomates are great options... but I'm hoping to do it on the cheap.... and it can't be done at those places.

Wally's is great, but they don't serve food. I enjoy Ryle's, but don't feel like going through the hassle of getting there...

So, I ask you, where can I eat for a reasonable price (under $20/pp), and see live jazz, that is easily accessable by public transportation?

Go to Lucky's--it;\'s great on a Friday night. Comfort food on one side and great live music on the other--and good drinks to boot.. Definitely for a Friday--Saturday has a whole different vibe, although now that I think of it, I have not been in a while (note to self, get to Lucky's). It may not be exclusively jazz, but the music will be great. Ah, wish I were there now.

I'm pretty sure that Lucky's doesn't have any jazz anymore. More bluesy-type, or R&B.

Cheap, T-accessible jazz and non-repugnant chow on a Friday night may be a bit of a tall order. Focusing on the less expensive element of your request:

I know you said Inman is too far for your tastes, but for thoroughness' sake, I might recommend the Lilypad. Inexpensive cover for some often outstanding music; if nothing else, it's the current venue for stalwart jazz monster trio the Fringe. This Friday appears to promise an "Afro Caribbean Avant Garde Jazz" group for a $10 cover. No food at the Lilypad, but there's plenty of great, cheap chow in the immediate 'hood (Ole, Olecito, Bukowski's, the Druid...).

Matt Murphy's sometimes does jazz. The Fireplace does live jazz every Wednesday and live Latin every Thursday.

Real Jazz or slash/jazz? On a Friday--don't think Johnny D's will have anything jazzy...it is a short list for sure...I'd say The Beehive! They are instituting a earlier jazz policy for dinner on Thursday-Saturday from 7-9pm starting tomorrow.. Another band will begin at 10pm(less jazzy, I bet)--other than that Acton Jazz Cafe possibly, but if Ryles is challenging then I think traveling to Acton is worse?

If Les Zyg is too expensive, then the Beehive would be out of reach as well. Given that you don't have to pay a cover, I'd still go with Les Zygomates. Their appetizers are pretty hefty in size and they give you lots of yummy, crusty bread. I've made a hearty meal out of their mussel appetizers and a beer. You should be able to get away with less than $20pp with a drink if you stick to the apps there.

if you could change it to thursday you might enjoy the jazz series and russian/european food at Vernissage in Brookline on Beacon Street. Cover is 12.00, dinner is around 20, and they give a discount to jazz boston members.

It's not always Jazz, but Johnny D's in Somerville has always been a good time. Entertainment is usually pretty good, and food is decent. It's fun on the cheap.
Ryles in Cambridge isn't bad either. They usually have some very good Jazz.
            Enjoy,
