Where to find epazote in SF?

I have soaked beans that I'm itching to cook, but I went to my old stand-by on S. Van Ness and 23rd, and they no longer carry epazote. 2 more produce markets later, and I gave up, figuring someone on chowhound might know where to find it...Help! No refried frijoles for us until I find it.

  1. If you had asked a month ago, I would have given you some of the huge plant I had growing in my rooftop garden. I had a ton and didn't even know what to do with it. Sadly, it's all dried out now. But it was super easy to grow in San Francisco, so you should try growing some. Not sure if they have it all year round, but I got a small epazote plant from the garden store at Potrero and Industrial, and transplanted it into my garden.

Are you looking for fresh or dried? I think Rainbow might have it dried.

I'm looking for fresh, but I might have to fall back on the dried (never tried it). Thanks for the tips.

The produce markets on 24th almost always have it. They are right around Harrison.

I almost made it to 24th, but I was worried that the markets would already be closed (or just wouldn't have it stocked). Thanks, I think I'll head there tomorrow.

    2. If Euell Gibbons were still alive he would find it in fields and in cracks in the sidewalk.

      1. Its not quite local to you but Monterrey market in Berkeley carries epasote.
