Ham Bone

I'm trying to find a place to get a ham bone for making soups and such. I'm just one person and won't eat a whole ham just to get the bone for split pea soup. Any suggestions? I'm in Andersonville.

Thanks in advance!

I've often used ham hocks as a substitute with good results (altho they do add salt, so taste before you season).

Many neighborhood stores that cater to European crowds have various smoked goodies in their cases- in Anderson Ville, I think the "other Harvestime" Foods (the one at Lawrence/Rockwell is Harvestime- I don't remember if the one at Clark/Catalpa has the same name) often has a big pile of smoked bone in pork loin and other smoky porky goodies.
I usually buy smoked pork neckbones from Lincolnwood Produce (Toughy/Lincoln in Lincolnwood) not as fatty as hock, but really dense- i make greens all winter!

Grant Park Packing (take the Green Line)

Due to a lack of good butcher shops, we usually buy our ham bone(s) at a place called Heavenly Ham.

        Here are their locations:

Before moving to Chicago I always got them at Honey-Baked Ham but I haven't tried it here. The nearest Honey-Baked to Andersonville is on Belmont but a bit west---check phone book then call and ask if they have any bones on hand. Where I used to live they always had them in the freezer. When they spiral-cut the hams the machine has to stop quite a way from the end of the bone so a lot of meat is left on. and of course that ham is delicious. These bones are a treasure for soup-making. Because they fill many party orders during the holiday season, that's a good time to stock your own freezer with ham bones.

I would call a couple of butcher shops and see if they have and will save you one. I live in Andersonville, too. There's a butcher shop on Broadway a couple of blocks north of the Dominick's near Thorndale. It's not the greatest butcher in the world, but they might have ham bones now and then. There's also a great butcher in Lincoln Square, which is not too far, called Lincoln Quality Meats. For that matter, the meat depts of supermarkets might even have ham bones now and then if you ask.
