New (?) search bug

I just tried using the Search This Board feature on the literal phrase "dry pork" in double quotes and it only brings back results containing "dry" and "pork".

Update - I noticed that the bug happens when 'options' are selected, like when you want to limit search to one Board.

Hmmm.....

    1. Another issue: I searched the Manhattan board for reports on a restaurant called Haveli and got 8000+ returns. Everything that contained the word "have." This is not helpful. Any way around it?

Add a Place for Haveli since there doesn't appear to be one. Make sure the Place is set for the appropriate region. A dynamically linked list of related topics should appear below the Place after it is updated. This may or may not work :(.

I agree with your issue, I tried searching for Haveli in Places *alone* and got One Place in MA and 356 other places with the word 'have' in the place comments. Grrrr.

I believe that CH uses Googles search engine and the default is a 'fuzzy' match, but this is Ridiculous!

CH staff, please let us know of workarounds and any docs on requesting an 'exact' search match. Putting double quotes around the word does not make a difference. TIA!

EDIT - just used Google Search website to find the CH Place for Haveli in NYC:
          http://www.chow.com/places/3919
Not sure where in the 356 results list this might have appeared :(.

            1. re: DiveFan

This won't solve the entire problem, but putting "title" followed by a colon will narrow the search to only that word in the title. Here's an example in Places for

              title:Haveli
              http://chowhound.chow.com/search?search%5Bquery%5D=title%3AHaveli&search%5Bclass_names%5D=Restaurant&search%5Bfrom%5D=10+years+ago&search%5Bto%5D=now&search%5Bsort_mode%5D=relevance&search%5Bboardgroup_id%5D=&Search.x=28&Search.y=6

If you use the options to limit the search to Manhattan, there is just one result

              http://chowhound.chow.com/search?search%5Bquery%5D=title%3AHaveli&search%5Bclass_names%5D=Restaurant&search%5Bfrom%5D=10+years+ago&search%5Bto%5D=now&search%5Bsort_mode%5D=relevance&search%5Bboardgroup_id%5D=8&search%5Bboard_id%5D=18&Search.x=23&Search.y=15

Unfortunately, if you search the Manhattan board rather than Places, if the word 'have' is in the title it still picks those up ...but only 357.

Since it is an Indian restaurant, adding that word to the search criteria gets you what you want

              title:Haveli Indian

                1. re: rworange

Thanks for the "title" suggestion (which didn't work, but maybe I'm doing something wrong). But - if I understand correctly - that limits returns to those that have Haveli in the title, when I'd also like to see everything with Haveli in the responses. The fuzzy match thing is bs. Why should I have to suffer inferior search results because some people can't spell? This is exactly what's wrong with the whole damn country.

                    1. re: small h

The thing with title is it has to be followed by a colon and then the search item. No space between. All of the links I provided should have worked.

Just from my own experience, really the reports with the restaurant name in the title are the ones that are worthwhile. Otherwise they amount usually to one line mentions... go to Haveli ... I love / hate Haveli ... etc.

I'm just saying that about one line mentions of well known places. Those one line mentions of places out of radar are gold. Just found one recently that way ... total dive bar serving gourmet food ... they had seared kangaroo in a reduction sauce ... this at a place where if you walked in the door you wouldn't think they could do a burger competantly.

                        1. re: rworange

Yes, your links worked & yes, searching "places" returned Haveli. But "title:haveli" got me everything with "have" in the title. I would not complain if I were searching for a restaurant called "Food Bar" or "Good Eats." But Haveli isn't even that close to "have." A google search at least prompts you with "did you mean...?" Sigh.
