Dinner to Celebrate Nephew's Engagement

I will be in D.C. in a few weeks and want to treat my nephew and his new fiance to a great dinner to celebrate their recent engagement. Would like somewhere with memorable dinner experience. I have reservations at Corduroy, but would like other suggestions. Italian is always appreciated. How is restaurant at Hay Adams? Too stuffy? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think you would all love Obelisk. You mentioned Italian and it's truly the best in town. 5 course, prix fixe, with choices for each course. And the atmosphere is very casually elegant and intimate.
The restaurant in the Hay Adams, the Jefferson Room, is lovely. The food & service are top notch. The dining room is beautiful too. I guess it depends upon what you all like as to whether you would think it is stuffy...you would want to dress appropriately (coat & tie, nice dresses) and the clientele is likely to be a little older. But we really enjoy it now and then when we feel like an old world dining experience.

I made a reservation at Obelisk as well. I hear it is very small..which is not a problem by any means. Thanks for the input on the Jefferson Room, I still am considering it because it is very high in the 'memorable evening' category I suspect.

Komi is a great suggestion- I went about 3 years ago and had a GREAT meal...I want to go back (I cannot believe it has been that long that I went w/out a repeat visit.)
Also, the restaurant 2941 is excellent food and ambience, and certainly a celebratory and special place. ENJOY....

By the way, 2941 is in Falls Church, VA...so it may not fit into your plans location-wise. I know you specified DC. However, I do think it is worth the drive.

We recently had my father's birthday party at 2941 in one of the private dining rooms. It was very nice and we all enjoyed the meal. For this trip, I won't be out that way...staying in town.

            thank you for your posts.

Corduroy is solid but personally, for a celebration dinner I would say Komi. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in DC. It is my special occasion go-to and a meal of a life time!!

Personally I would stick with my reservation at Corduroy. The food is amazing there. I ate there with my boyfriend about 2 months ago and my boyfriend is still talking about our meal (he thinks its one of the best meals he's ever had in DC!). Is it top-notch cooking and the new location is sophisticated while still feeling relaxing.

Thank you. Is Corduroy quiet enough to actually hear the people at the same table? I don't know his fiance very well and would like to be able to have an easy conversation.

It's perfect for that. The restaurant doesn't have music playing (the chef has been quoted that he would prefer for the focus to be on the food rather then music and loud noise).
