If you're familiar with this slightly sweet, buttery, ricotta filled Italian pastry you'll know that to say I "need" it is not an overstatement. If you know a bakery in the DC area - anywhere closer than Pasqualini's in Rehoboth would be a good start - I'd be ever so grateful.
I would definitely take a trip to baltimore and compare Piedegrotta to Vaccaro's. Piedegrotta wins hands down in our circles, both for flavor, authenticity, and the sense of personal pride and passion that goes into each item. It was the only place we were able to find St. Joseph's Day pastries (zeppola) last year
Not sure about "Sfogliata," but I know where to find Sfogliatelle, an italian pastry which sounds similar to what you are looking for. They sell them at The Italian Store in Arlington. They aren't actually made on the premises (they come in frozen from NY I believe) but you can buy them baked there or buy a few frozen ones and bake them yourself at home, at the same time filling your house with an AMAZING aroma.
Hope this helps.
