philly transplant seeking the best CHICKEN cheesesteak (not beef please!)
Homesick and seeking the best CHICKEN cheesesteak in the LA area. Live in Hollywood but will drive almost anywhere to satiate my craving. Have scoured the board and found lots of delicious sounding regular (beef?) cheesesteaks, but thought a thread on chicken ones might be awesome. Thanks!

I've had pretty good chicken cheesesteaks at Papa Jake's on Rosecrans in Manhattan Beach, and at Philly West on Westwood in West L.A. Not as good as what you'd get in Philly, but they both had a decent version. It's been a long time since I've been to either place but I think I preferred Papa Jake's. The only things to consider are that Papa Jake's is takeout and Philly West is more of a bar than a restaurant.

I only eat chicken steaks at philly cheesesteak places. Fredo's chickensteak is/was great, thinly sliced chicken, not pieces/chunks of chicken. The status of Fredo's apparently is in question: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/554350

I've never had a chicken cheesesteak while visiting Philly, and I've never had one here in L.A. But, if Big Mike's makes a chicken cheesesteak anywhere near as good as everything else they do, then I'd say your craving is satiated...

re: Joe Blowe
Now that Markie D's is gone, Big Mike's is my westside favorite for Philly cheesesteaks. Good meat, hot, generous, and I like the flavor punch from their hot and sweet peppers. They offer a chicken cheesesteak option, and while I'm a purist they also have some other Italian hoagies including an eggplant parm that could be a vegie-friendly option. I have yet to try their garlic fries alongside, but their lacy battered onion rings are really excellent, and a great accompaniment to any main they serve there. I've been to the Big Mike's in El Segundo, on the west side of Main to the north near the high school with an easy parking lot alongside.

If you look deep into some of the Philly steak theads, you'll see some of my comments/questions on chicken versions....I have never received a reply, so I assumed I'm the only Hound who does chicken...I don't eat beef for a variety of reasons.
Burbank shouldn't be too far to drive. I go to Philly's Best on Olive, and order a chicken hoagie w/provolone, but they also have da Wiz and white american cheese. Pretty generous on the portions, very flavorful, and on an Amorose (sp?) roll, so pretty authentic. Plus, they have peppers/pickles etc. and really good fries and onion rings.
Try it, you won't be sorry, and be sure to report back!
