New Places in Garden City, LI

1) Old Smokey's BBQ on 7th seems to be becoming another BBQ place. Workers said it will focus on rotisserie and ribs. Anyone know anything?
2) Heard that the shuttered (sad) Taste is to become something else. Is this true?
3) Another new Japanese is supposed to open in back of former Saks building. Anyone know anything?
4) Natural market looks good...supposed to be natural/organic foods. We'll see I guess.

Thanks for any info.

    1) Rotico rotisserie cafe.
    3) Kumon Japenese. Know nothing else, or how many Japanese places we need
    4) Should be open pretty soon. Seems to be like a "mini Whole Foods" type of place.

Mumon Restaurant to open mid-Jan (hopefully) in the BACK of the former Saks building on Franklin. The place looks amazing, so i hope they're on time...

Taste is to become La Nonna Bella Ristorante. Who knows?
Rotico looks like it may be open in a couple of weeks.

        RoTico opened last week.

The menu is a latin-inspired rotisserie, with sandwiches and some other entrees.

The Barbacoa is fantastic, and the soups (black bean, and pozole) are awesome.

They're open for lunch and dinner 7 days/week.

Very good, mostly all made in-house. Excellent rotisserie chicken and good fish tacos. Tremendous carrot slaw (with pineappe and nuts). Nice people, just moved to LI from DC...new place and new baby the same week. Delivery to come. Can't wait to try the barbacoa and the pork (shoulder?). Very nice addition to the neighborhood.

I agree, I thought the chicken was very good. The barbacoa was good too but I thought it could use a little more heat so I put hot sauce on it and enjoyed it even more. Haven't tried the pork yet. The place looks quiet, I hope they stay in business.

Also since you mentioned the Natural market....they have surprisingly good bread and prime meats.

It's on 7th, where Smokey's BBQ used to be. Good little write-up in the Newsday blog. Good little place.

Thnaks. Do you know of any decent sushi places in the area. Preferably with a lunch special?

Not sure if u want to stay only in Garden City, but not far away in Williston Park, Homura is very good and has a good lunch special.

My husband and I really enjoy Sushi-Ya on Franklin Ave. and they have lunch specials. Always fresh. I would definitely give it a try. I absolutely love their special rolls...but that's not on the lunch menu.

Natural is really good and getting better. Great cheeses, prepared foods. They also are great at accomodating requests. They even make their own frozen yogurt a la pinkberry...even with rice flour cubes (like mooshi). Fine fish,too...they go to Hunt's Point every morning. Also, Siggi's AMAZING yogurts. Love this place.

Best cheese section/deli (Applegate/Boars Head/Schaller & Weber) in town. I'm very picky about my fish, but I had a real "fresh" piece of Scotish salmon for $11 a pound (extremely reasonable). Good veggie selection.
                      So far, so good.

No, but tried to go with 3 other people no res on Sat...it was packed and reservations through the night. Not sure what it means but it can't be bad.

I really want to try Mumon...chefs from Morimoto and others. Seems very high profile. Nice looking place. $12 and $18 lunch deals (not sure of details). Poor location. www.mumonrestaurant.com

You're kidding right? Food just is not that good -- just average, but I guess you get a lot of it. Wait staff is nice. Of course, anything is better than Taste.

New to 7th...maybe an upscale-ish place called Pure Burger Garden City. Should be good.
