Kosher (and good) sherry??
Hello! I did a search of this board and could only find mention of sherry in threads about old casks used for aging scotch.
Can anyone direct me to some decent kosher sherry? I actually like it, and it is a necessary ingredient in Chinese cooking. Makes stir frys delicious.
Thanks, p.j.
p.j.:
Tio Pepe Kosher Palomino Fino is what you are looking for.
It is the real deal, from Jerez, and very dry.
It's available now; its availability to you depends on where you live, the inventory of your local shops, and whether your state permits you to purchase wine via te internet.
You can view a photo of the label (including London Bais Din hechsher) here: http://www.epicurious.com/images/arti...

I believe KEDEM also produces a sherry. And Reese and another brand or two produce (or distribute) O-U-certified cooking sherry.

Midasgold,
Thanks. I really am looking for a sherry that is drinkable. I will keep your suggestions in mind, though.

gonzo,
I finally went today to pick up a bottle of Tio Pepe that I had the wine store order: lo and behold: no more hecksher!!!!!! ARGH. No mention of kashrut on their non-searchable website.
Does anyone know of anyone who makes a kosher drinkable sherry???
Many thanks, and chag Pesach sameach , p.j.

Here's a link to a kosher wine seller that claims to have Tio Pepe still certified kosher. Maybe some is left over, or maybe the omission is temporary or a mistake. I don't know about the pricing and shipping might be a problem, but I thought it worth a try. For cooking we use mirin which is easy to find here in california certified kosher and makes a great substitute. I don't think you would want to drink it though, even after passover.

I believe that Tio Pepe makes both hechshered and non-hechshered Sherry. Contact one of the major kosher wine distributors in the NY area (i.e. Skyview), they will probably be able to help you.

Thanks, lburrell. I hadn't looked at that site in years - - - had forgotten all about it.
I will also have to look for heckshered mirin. Can you give me a brand name or two?
Thanks very much, and chag sameach, p.j.

OU certifies Senryo, Mizkan, Takara and Kikkoman. As always, check the label.

I buy Eden brand mirin (which is something sold on grocery shelves, not in liquor stores.) It's under the OK, I believe, although I can't check my bottle right now as it's in the sold cabinet of chametz items.
