Pork Shanks

I'm not looking for smoked ham hocks but rather a place where I can order raw pork shanks. I've been trying to stop by Whole Foods to see if they have them or can get them but just have not had the time. I therefore turn to all of you to see if anyone else has ever found said product.

  1. I can't say for sure, but check Asian markets like Ranch 99. They get in whole pigs and butcher them and I'm sure they must have shanks.

99 Ranch gets whole pigs? I've never seen it in the Orange County stores. Maybe it varies by location?

At least they get big enough pieces to sell different cuts than 'regular' groceries. For example, they sell 'long cut front pork legs', which include most of the hock.

I've seen them selling the heads at the Ranch 99 in San Gabriel, so I'm assuming they're getting the whole pig. I've seen a number of deliveries around Asian markets even in LA Chinatown getting the whole pigs to butcher.

You might be able to get shanks at some Mexican carniceria.

        1. Also try places like Vallarta Markets

          1. Whole Foods sid they believed they could get them but they do in fact carry them in the meat case at 99 Ranch Market on Sepulveda. Thanks for everybody's in put.

Out of curiosity were you looking for raw pork hocks? They always have them at 99 Ranch, but if your are going to do a prep where you want a big one (more meat and proportionately more skin) I like the ones at Alpine Village Market. I have seen Chinese customers there as well and we discussed how much lovelier these were.
