Best diner in Manhattan?

What gets your vote for the best diner in Manhattan?
Not for anything crazy, just for a solid reliable morning breakfast and the occasional club sandwhich or something.

I guess I'd agree with that for Tribeca, but only because there are very few diners there. I don't know that I've ever actually liked a meal I've had there. I got a pie at Gee Whiz once that I swear was made with canned fruit cocktail. My experience is mostly on the UWS, Midtown West and Tribeca, and my choice would probably be Utopia, or Big Nick's, though the latter doesn't really have the diner "feel". I haven't found any diner in Manhattan that matches up to the places I've visited in New England.

I used to frequent Utopia when I first moved to the neighborhood and have yet to eat anything good there. Everything tastes processed and freezer burnt. Now Big Nick's has become my standby diner, although I agree it has more of a truck-stop, greasy spoon quality than a diner.

Diner 24 was my favorite diner in NYC until it closed, although that's probably far from the classic American diner, which I've yet to see adequately recreated in Manhattan.

    2. i'm always a bit hesitant to partake in "best X in manhattan" discussions since there are generally too many X's for anyone to've tried enough to make this determination.

      but.

that said, i really like big nick's for breakfast, hanafin's for dinner, and 2nd ave deli for any time of day i feel like chopped liver. big nick's and hanafin's are on the UWS, 2nd ave. deli in kip's bay / murray hill.

big nick's does great fresh OJ, a deliciously disgustingly bad-for-you challah french toast, a good fluffy omelette, ok coffee. hanafin's has much, much better late night food than other diners (high quality ingredients, competently prepared). 2nd ave deli has great smoked fish plates, good chopped liver, pastrami sandwiches, and latkes (but awful coffee).

I like the Metro Diner on Broadway (around 100th)

      2. Silver Star Diner on the UES.
