I used to get fresh American porcini -- from Oregon, if I recall, and generally smaller than the Italian variety -- at Andronico's Markets in the Bay Area. They made a wonderful appetizer or side dish brushed with olive oil and very lightly broiled or grilled. Do any Southern California grocers carry them?

You can buy flash frozen porcini at Guidi Marcello on 20th in Santa Monica.

Thanks for you help SecretAsianMan. I intend to try Brunello the first chance I get. I found a place on the net that will ship fresh domestic porcini from Oregon. About $25 per pound. Trader Joes once carried frozen porcini and they had very little flavor. I'll check Surfas in Culver City.

re: SecretAsianMan
Here is the site for the fresh domestic porcini. I think I'll splurge. Heck with the economy.

I strongly recommend Brunello Trattoria's Veal and Porcini pasta special. If you call ahead and ask for it, they'll make it for you. You'll dream about it for days.
