ISO: Jam Jars

We are looking for 2 - 3 oz jam jars, around 180 of them. What stores in the area can you recommend? Preferably in SF or Oakland areas, we are trying to take advantage of the end of the summer to try and make little gifts for family and friends.

Thanks!

If you want the really small jars, like Marshal Honey uses, I don't know if you can get "canning" jars ... the kind with a lid and a rim that are separate pieces. However, you can order small jars and other containers in quantity from Glory Bee Honey in Eugene, OR. They are on-line and have always filled orders quickly for me.

california glass (but they have a minimum i believe $500 or so) - or you could try Sunburst bottles in washington - they do small orders...

Cal Glass is claiming a $1000 minimum on their website but I've bought small quantities of bottles from them in the past with a much smaller minimum (I think it was $30) from their will-call desk. Worth a call at least -- nearby and fairly likely to be the source the various honey people are using.

It's been a few years so things might have changed. If you do manage to get jars from them, maybe followup here and let us know what their current policy is?

i've bought jars from them the past few yers and, unless it's changed recently, believe it's still $500 minimum...the minimum was raised a couple of years ago....always worth teaming up with some else or piggybacking on another order!

Maybe try California Glass down near the Oakland airport?

We went to Rainbow today and size is the issue, they are all larger than what we need. Basically, these are for wedding favors and anything over 3 ounces cannot be carried back on a plane. So far, my only luck has been mail order but I would love a local source.

            Ask Marshall Honey.

They might have a local source of those jars. If you don't have your heart set on making your own jam, Marshall's sells 2 ounce jars of their 'honeymoon' honey as wedding favors ... all the stuff like names and date is on the jar.

A 3 oz jar will be really annoying to fill, and it's questionable about whether they'ld allow it on the plane if you don't have a marking on the jar. I've put jam jars in checked luggage before and they come through fine.

I think you'll have difficulty finding jars that small in stores. 4 oz jars are easy to find, though, you'll see them in hardware stores everywhere. I always find them in the Ace Hardware on Grand in Oakland, or on University in Berkeley, but any hardware store will have them (some grocery stores do, but that's less reliable). I'd call ahead and see how many they have, just in case you need to go to a few locations to get what you need, or to see if you can get any sort of discount.

Thanks for the reality check. I was just thihking the smallest jars which as you mention are 4oz. Two oz is Marshall's Honey smallest jars. If they OP really wants jars that small, stop by Marshalls at theSat Ferry Plaza market and ask Sue Marshall where she gets her jars.

Rainbow Grocery always has lots of stuff for canning. Also, the Cole Hardware on Mission between 29th and 30th has a great canning section. I was there recently and mentioned to one of the employees how happy I was that they had big (2 quart) canning jars. She said that at that Cole Hardware, in particular, they are stocking more canning and preserving stuff. You might ask if you could order a large amount of them.

Any hardware store like Ace or Orchard will carry them. Even markets like Safeway or stores like Target or Wal-mart will have them. Don't know who will give the best price or a valume discount.

My little jam jars came from Orchard but it was a while ago.
