Recommendations near Newark Penn Station?

Hi everyone

We're visiting NYC again in January but this time die to a great hotel deal we're staying in the Hilton at Newark Penn station. We figure the $200 a night savings in hotel room costs is worth the 20 minute train journey each day!

We plan to catch a Devils game too which I understand is walking distance from the hotel. Wondered if there are any decent places to eat around that area for before / after the game?

We like American / Italian / French with casual atmosphere.

There are a couple upscale places near the NJ Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), which is not far from Penn Sta. In the other direction (south?) is the Ironbound, which is filled with Portugese/Brazilian/Spanish places. Do a search on this site using Ironbound or NJPAC to see what people think.

You're going to be staying right on the edge of The Ironbound, as jmoryl mentioned...THAT is where you want to eat! Breakfasts of custard cups and REALLY good (strong) coffee and espresso, and meals of everything from baccalau to rodizio await you!
A few of my favorites, all within walking distance--Adega Grill, Marisqueria, Casa Vasca, Brasilia Grill, Nasto's (ice cream and sorbets)...and if you search on here for Ironbound or Newark, you'll find plenty more.
