Where to get the best pork belly

Hey hounds.

What are your favorite restaurants to get pork belly in the city?

I dont care how its cooked. I dont care if its in a salad, sandwich, app, main, or even dessert.

I love this stuff, and I want some interesting suggestions on places that use it well.

Agree on Bar Tartine, that pork belly open faced sandwich at brunch is incredible.

I just had a wonderful pork belly dish...unctuous and crispy skined at "Cane Rosso" in the Ferry Building... S.F.

Not a restaurant, but for home use, get the black pork belly (kurobuta) slices from Nijiya Supermarket (the SF location is in Japantown). They have three kinds. One kind that is very thinly sliced that you can use shabu shabu style (quick dip in boiling water) and you can add whatever sauce you want, or you can stir fry it with a lot of garlic and soy sauce for a quick fix. There's another cut that is a tad bit thicker that they offer that might be more appropriate for sukiyaki, and finally they offer a nice side block (uncut) that if you stew/simmer it, can be supreme (then you can cut it yourself to whatever thickness you want).

I remember reading somewhere that Sozai in the Sunset has pork belly grilled dish or skewer (Japanese style) that's interesting.

We like Ton Kiang's version - on Geary/23rd-ish. Be sure to get some rice to sop up the goodies. Order a dish of veggies to kinda balance the badness... but it's all good!

Very interesting suggestion of Ton Kiang. I expected places like NOPA, Alembic, etc.

I never knew Ton Kiang had them. It is only 10 blocks from my parents house, and I used to go there often, so I will check back in.

Ton Kiang's is one of my favorites and theirs is the best version of that dish I've found. The menu lists it as "Steamed Bacon with Dried Mustard Greens."
