Pretty good dinner at East Manor on Kissena Blvd
I had a late dinner there on 9/15/08 with two other friends. Another friend who was not present at the dinner recommended it as East Manor on Kissena Blvd is currently doing a special promotion on a variety of their dishes. At first I was hesitant to go there for dinner as I ate there awhile back and only found their dishes to be okay. But the friend who recommended the place mentioned that the Chilean sea bass in teriyaki sauce was really good there and I had never had Chilean sea bass at a Cantonese restaurant before so that was what sent me there.
The three of us arrived there at 9pm and were seated promptly. After looking at the menu we ordered:
(1) Chao Zhou style cold crab $15.00
(2) Chilean sea bass in teriyaki sauce $12.50
(3) Sweet and Sour fish slices (I am not sure of the name) $7.50
(4) Steamed Chicken with vegetables $7.50
Items #2,#3,#4 came off the special promotion menu. Item #1 we got from one of those house specials that were sitting on the table before we arrived.
The crab was fresh and perfectly cooked. It was served cold with a sweet and tart sauce for dipping. My only complaint is that the crab was kind of small. I had this dish twice before at East in Elmhurst and the crab there was a lot bigger though the crab meat was not as sweet nor was the consistency of the crabmeat as high of a quality as the East on Kissena. I definitely would order this here again.
The Chilean sea bass order contained four pieces. It was an excellent dish. The only thing is that I don’t think it was Chilean sea bass. I would order this here again.
The Sweet and Sour fish slices were pretty good. I think they used catfish. No fishy flavor at all, or the sweet and sour fish slices masked it. The dish also had pepper and onion slices in it. I would order this again if it was $7.50.
The steamed chicken with vegetables was okay. It was half a steamed chicken covered in a light sauce with very little vegetables. It took about 25 minutes for this dish to come as they really steam this chicken from scratch. Not a big fan of this dish so would not order again even if it is only $7.50.
The service was pretty good. After dinner they bought us fruit and red bean soup along with the check. The check already had tax and tip included. Pretty satisfied. Next time I go I am going to order the crab again and will not be sharing it with others. =)
