Onion Rings in Sunnyside / Woodside / JH?

catherine Sep 18, 2008 12:11 PM

Okay, I admit it. I love really really good onion rings on occasion. I'm 6 months pregnant and it's seriously my one vice lately, so I have decided it's time to find some really good ones in the area. I tried Donovan's and was really disappointed. What I'd like is a nice beer battered, thickly cut, onion ring. Preferably with something good to dip it in. Any ideas? Extra points for a relaxed pub with good beer (for the husband) and really good pickles on the side (for me!).

well if you have a car, get yourself to Rockville center on LI and go to Bigelow's clam shack, the best onion rings i've had in ages, and you can dip them in their excellent cocktail sauce. Great fried clams, and cole slaw, too.

pj horgans serves onion rings, they included one when i ordered a burger from them. they are thick, beer-battered (i believed). not particularly crunchy, which i prefer; if anything, they might've been a little soggy. not sure if i would necessarily recommend a trip to pj horgans for the rings particularly, but if you are in the area, it's one of the places that comes to mind.

Good to know. It's practically around the corner so I'll try it at some point. For the moment, though, I think we'll try Legends -- it's been on my list for a while.

I you like hamburgers, put PJ Hogans on your list for that too. It is the best in the area imho and could really be special if they went for a premium bakery roll.

Nothing like shredded onion bits encased in breading that have been frozen and then deep fried. All sarcasm aside, whenever I go to WC it's four cheeseburgers and a side of onion rings. The worst I've ever done at WC is go surf & turf ... cheeseburger topped off with fried clams ... mmm delish!

Seriously? Let me know what you think. I was starving when I did it, but I actually liked it. The crispiness of the fried clams worked good against the sogginess of the bun and burger.

I was going to ask whether this was your combination or if white castle actually sells such a thing when I realized that the better question is -- white castle sells fried clams?!? I'm so out of the white castle loop. Of course I've always wondered just how bad the "chicken rings" actually are. It sounds like a horrible thing to do to a piece of chicken. Because, unlike onions, I'm pretty sure that chicken meat doesn't come in rings.

Jackson Hole on Astoria blvd.has good onion rings. Whole onions, crispy coating(not beer batter though), and you can get them with melted cheddar. You can get a side of ranch for dipping.

Also they have good homemade pickles!

Oddly, they serve two different kinds of rings at Donovan's. Sometimes they serve frozen ones, sometimes homemade. My ex-boyfriend used to make me ask what kind they had that night when I would get an order for take-out. And if they were not the homemade, then I had to get him fries. Honestly, I never really paid attention to what the "good ones" looked like so even they may not be what you are looking for. But if you were there when they were serving obviously pre-made frozen ones, then try again and ask! Good Luck!
