NUSARA THAI KITCHEN, Elmhurst..good

erica Sep 17, 2008 12:05 PM

Four of us had a good dinner here last night. The restaurant is located in a shopping center with free (!) parking, on Broadway in Elmhurst. I was astounded by the SE Asian food opportunities of the neighborhood and hope to return to do some exploring.

Nusara is a sleek, modern place that was quite crowded during the time we seated, from about 7pm to 8:30pm. The other diners were Asian, from various countries. Very friendly and solicitous service is provided by the young, NY-born daughter of the owners. She told me that the place is a family affair, with various cousins and aunts doing the cooking and serving and returning often to Thailand for spices and other ingredients.

Our selections were chosen with an eye toward the spice-shunning friend at the table. I mean to return to more fully explore the long menu. That said, we were generally pleased with the food, the service, and the atmosphere of the place. HIgh marks, too, for the handsome presentation of the various dishes. Definitely a cut above that at my usual Queens Asian (mostly Chinese) favorites. A flat screen tv is turned to a news channel and volume was kept pleasingly low.

Her is what we ate; remember that we concentrated on the non-spicy options and so probably missed the prime items:

Sun-soaked pork strips (referred to as pork jerky; marinated pork strips were hat I would call this)..Exellent! Addictive!

Shrimp mermaids (recommended by our server) Whole shrimp in a friend batter with sweet dipping sauce. Good.

Glass noodle salad (Yun Woon Sen). Moderate spice. Very good pile of glass noodles with ground chicken.

Pad Cee Ew..Excellent, chow fun-type noodles with Chinese broccoli and pork..mmm!

Tamarind Duck..Excellent, beautifully presented.

Fried green tea ice cream. Interesting but once is enough.

Thai iced tea..turns orange when you stir. Interesting.

Bill was $15 per person for four of us.

Recommended.
