Barbecue near Silverlake?

I'm having some friends over to watch my Gators stomp Tennessee on Saturday and want to pick up some good barbecue for the occasion. I am well aware that there is not really any good barbecue in Silverlake itself, but does anyone know of any great places in the vicinity?

  1. Not too much comes to mind -- what about the Spring Street Smokehouse downtown?

If Matt Esq. is willing to venture to downtown LA, I would suggest either BBQ King or Showbiz Ribs.

BBQ King does a good rendition (for LA standards anyway) of Texas-style ribs. http://www.texasbbqking.com/index.php

Showbiz does a pretty decent vinegar based sauce for their que. http://showbizribs.com/index.html

I think both places are a notch better than Spring Street, but then bbq is like sushi around here ... everyone's got an opinion and everyone is, of course, right.

Showbiz is very new. How is it? Where would you park for just a pick up order?

Best bet is to park in the lot behind the building that houses the Immigration Courts next to Pershing Sq.

          They also deliver.

As to the Q, it's decent to mediocre and is only worthwhile if you really really slather on the sauce.

I have heard the new BBQ King is good. The old one wasn't, bad but there was something cool about the place and the owners. The new location downtown specializes in takeout.

        Close enough to you...

I know there's a few negative reviews on top, but when I went I was pretty happy. Would avoid the "sliced" brisket, but the burnt ends and ribs were good.

        1. I would call Jay at J&J Burgers & BBQ and order a party tray, they have different sizes. I know Adams east of Fairfax is not Silver Lake, but you will be happy.

          1. 101 to 110 to 10 exit Crenshaw and turn right at Phillips -- 20 minutes.

Definitely Phillips, but only to the on Crenshaw and Adams. Call ahead and order, you will have a shorter wait. Make sure you are time, otherwise they will make you wait. Love the beef ribs, sliced beef and the chicken links.

I like the OG Phillips in Leimert Park much better!

... but Adams is a little closer to SL

Hershey, you are right but I personally like the Que from Phillips in the original location. JMO I do still highly recoommend J&J Burgers & BBQ

I didn't like the neighborhood, very uncomfortable, and I go anywhere.

Tried JnJ owner was very nice, but they were out of all the bbq.

            2. Do what I did last Saturday for the SC/Ohio St game, followed by the Marquez fight.
I fired up my grill and grilled 10 lbs of chicken hot wings, some bratwursts, and hot Italian sausages. Good times in Echo Park!
