Lunch in Kensington (Calgary)

I have a friend visiting for the day next week and she would like to go for lunch in Kensington - somewhere "unique and fun and offbeat". Any suggestions? We're not looking for anything highend, just good, simple eats followed by walking and shopping. Thanks!

Are you talking about Fassil's? It is on my list to go to. Is it much better than Marathon, or around the same?

Yes, that's the one. I actually liked it better than Marathon, but not by much.

If you want unique and offbeat, I would go to Marathon. It's an Ethiopian restaurant. Get the lunch for 2. You share samples of their food. Its quite diffferent.

We've tried all of the ethiopian restaurants in the city....Marathon is definitely one of the better ones (the other is the one on 17th but I'm blanking on the name).

Vero's is pretty good - it just opened a few weeks ago. Pulcinella for pizza is also tasty.

seconded- have heard good things about Vero and Pulcinella is definitely unique and dripping with atmosphere. When I get lunch in Kensington I usually hit Globefish (sort of the extreme edge of Kensington, on 14th St) or Sushi Zeal for sushi (Zeal is IMO underrated, I've been three times and liked what I got very much, and prices are very decent), get the Malaysian curry at Sungate Cafe (though last visit they were understaffed and I gave up without ordering- and though the curry is excellent, the space is pretty depressing), or the Shish Tawouk at Shawarma Station.

Ditto for Pulcinella and Globefish. I'd also recommend Heartland Cafe - the coffee is not great but I really like their sandwiches, qeusadillas etc and cakes, and the building has a lot of character.
