Harvard Square food
I worked in Harvard Square over 10 yrs ago, may go back to area again soon. I was looking on the web for places I used to frequent there. Sadly, it looks like many are long gone.
Does Warburtons (had really good chocolate chip cookies) still exist? There was also a good pizza place located on a side street, in the building the Urban Outfitters was located. Does anyone know of the place or the name of it? You could go there for lunch for a slice or two and a coke for a couple of bucks. I just remember the pizza was simple, but oh so good! Looks like Emack and Bolio's is gone and probably the ice cream parlor by the Coop is too (I forget the name).
I know not the most upscale places, but they have good memories for me.
I believe the ice cream parlor by the Coop was a Brigham's branch. Long gone. Warburton's ... long gone, along with Elsie's, the Tasty, the Wursthaus, the Greenhouse Cafe, The Skewers, 33 Dunster Street, and a batch of other Harvard Square famous (and infamous) eateries.
Not sure about the pizza place, but one oldie but goodie that is still in business is Pinocchio's. It isn't in the building where Urban Outfitters is now, but it's in a building down JFK Street, and the pizza is still the same. Cafe Avventura was in the Garage when I was an undergraduate, that's also long gone (the replacement is called Crazy Dough's). Also as beetlebug points out, there's still Bartley's. And the Hong Kong, if you're hungering for a scorpion bowl with plastic animals.
While we're on a stroll down memory lane, the Garage used to have a great sandwich and cheese shop called Formaggio's, and next to it was the original upscale coffee joint in town, The Coffee Connection. I believe it is a Starbucks now... To save the day, though, Pho Le (formerly Pho Pasteur, but same owner, Le) is still going strong and with good reason.
Thank -you Dr. Jimbob! I believe that was the pizza place I was thinking of and the ice cream place too. I remember the Hong Kong, pink building on Mass.Ave, never ventured in there though. Sounds like much has changed in Harvard Square. Life goes on as they say. I still think of that pizza though.....
Warburton's is long gone. It's now Crema Cafe which has some really nice baked goods. There are a couple of threads on it where posters have listed strong and weak food.
The pizza place is probably in the Garage which is in the same connected building as Urban Outfitters. I'm talking about the JFK Street entrance. I think the pizza place may have changed names, but I'm not sure.
There is another ice cream parlor on the back side of the Coop (Church Street side) and it's called Lizzys. Herrell's is still on Dunster and in the Garage, there is a Ben and Jerry's.
Still there is Pinocchio's and Bartley's Burgers.
