Exile for a day

Esteemed Hounds
I am leaving LA for a day to see the Chihuly at the de Young. I am leaving dear Monterey Park behind and thinking fondly of the Yank Sing of my very long ago youth. It seems to have risen in a de luxe sort of way, and I am intimidated. I was, however, impressed with their vegetarian claims as I will be with a strict veggie - no fish, but not vegan. Some 'hound searching has turned up references to Ton Kiang and Koi Palace, and in the non dim sum department Green's was mentioned. In that same department Angkor Borei and Slanted Door seem to have emerged. My other fellow traveller is a parking and traffic phobe. She panics easily. I will be driving and am not afraid, If you can spare some advice for a humble LA Hound, I would appreciate any guidance.

You might consider checking out Bang San Thai for the veggie options:

Slanted Door is excellent and very veggie friendly. Just *tell them* you want any of their many many veggie dishes to be exclusively vegetarian and they will make sure it is so. Also, the food rocks. Valet is easy.

Ton Kaing is wonderful, veggie options are very limited.

Are you looking for lunch or dinner options? And are you staying in town or specifically just coming into the city for the day to see the Chihuly?

As long as you are driving, you might consider Aziza.

What RWOrange said. There is good Dim Sum in Los Angeles. There is NOTHING like Aziza in Los Angeles. Trust me...

(BTW, you might consider heading to SFMOMA -- their Modern Chinese Art exhibit coupled with the Freida Khalo exhibit blows the Chihuly out of the water).

Indeed, you can get dim sum in LA. The only place that people mention doing LA and SGV better is Koi Palace...but it's pricey and it helps to have at least 4...might not be that much better then LA.

I third Aziza and will also mention Burma Superstar on the Clement.

KP is not as pricey as Yank Sing. Chinatown has a vegetarian restaurant, Lucky Creation, that serves dim sum.

For once I agree with you. I thought the Chihuli show was pure kitsch, and SFMOMA served up two blockbusters for the price of one. How's the food at either, to stay on topic?

For me, it was the curry tofu at SFMoma's nearby Samovar Tea which also completed the winning combination of art/food. The Chihuly show was more than kitsch -- it was downright UNAPPETIZING!
