Oakland Dinner Rec for 6

calalilly Sep 15, 2008 02:50 PM

Hi, I'm trying to find a nice fun place for dinner in Oakland for 6 people. We had wanted to check out Wood Tavern but it's completed booked for that night. I'd prefer a nice place where we can be loud with a full bar.

I like Cesar's, but have already been. Also been to Oliveto's, Mono, Camino, and Dopo so would prefer something different. Any recs?

A Cote. Has all of your preferences, and the drinks are fantastic. Failing that, Pizzaiolo.

Flora in downtown Oakland. Beautiful restaurant with a nostalgic feel and the bar is absolutely stellar.

Flora is another good idea. The drinks are great there.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're going to Flora later this week, will report back.

T-Rex in Berkeley is one option, as is Fonda on Solano in Albany, (Yeah, yeah, I know -- it's not Oakland, but it isn't THAT far away).

I am NOT a big fan of A Cote, but that depends -- others are. Me? I avoid the place.

        Pizzaiolo is another good option.

Camino MIGHT work, but the menu is limited, and when I've been there, the bar wasn't that loud. (But for me, that's a good thing.)

HEARTILY second Pizzaiolo. Fun, casual, great food. The pizza's great (I always get it with a cracked egg), but the starters are what really get me. I believe they also purchase a whole pork and prep it in different ways throughout the week. Good drinx too. I usually swing by Dona Tomas next door for a good margarita or other "aperitif" before Pizzaiolo. If it's a warm summer evening, snag a seat outside.

Been wanting to try Camino and hearing nothing but good things. It was also named in a recent issue of Food & Wine mag.

I would not bring 6 people to Camino. Even aside from the mediocre meal that I've had there (and very up and down reports from people here), the menu is very limited (only three entrees a night) and it's not really a good place for 6 with the seating.

Thanks for all the recommendations. The 6 of us went to Flora on Friday and had a great time. The space is not what I expected at all, but it’s nice and very welcoming. We started at the bar with a couple of margaritas that were strong and tangy. For apps, I split the pork belly with my husband. It was nice and crispy, kind of like carnitas. Good but not wow. Others at the table had shrimp cocktail and the cheese plate. For dinner, two of us had the steak, two had the vegetarian puff pastry dish, one had the burger, and the other had the pork chop. My steak was cooked perfectly medium rare with really good potatoes gratin and some greens. Everyone seemed to like their food a lot except for the guy who ordered the burger. He hardly ate any of it. For dessert we had the caramel ice cream, hot chocolate, chocolate mousse and one other thing I can’t remember right now. Overall we had a very fun evening. I don’t think Flora is the type of place you should go out of your way for, but a great addition to the neighborhood.
